Ali has been working on the Spring 2021 Dance Film Concert and shared some insight on the process:
Has anything surprised you in your creative process with the unique model?
I was surprised by the level of clarity I could see in remote rehearsals and how easily that translated once we were all in the same place. I felt deep gratitude for the level of commitment and presence the dancers in this piece brought to the rehearsal process and how embodied the material was once we got to stage.
How has your process changed from choreographing a work for stage and now transferring it to film?
One unique component about this piece is that it was originally created on stage. I felt like knowing the stage version of this piece gave me insight as to what I was looking at through the Zoom screens during rehearsal. I had the benefit of understanding and being able to visualize where the dancers would be on stage for this version as opposed to creating a brand-new work with new spacing and relationships. Having this understanding allowed me to focus my energy on other creative aspects such as altering the theme of the piece, changing choreography, and thinking about specific film angles.
